Fillers

A “filler-treatment”, the common name for injections with a gel composed of hyaluronic acid, is a highly effective non-surgical treatment, designed to slow down (or hide) the effects of ageing in the face.

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body of each human being, so the careful facial injections with the product can naturally fill in lines and wrinkles in the skin, even adding moisture and lubrication. The facial skin will feel and look younger, the face will be firmer, lips will have more volume – almost immediately after the initial treatment. This very rejuvenating effect will remain for up to six or even twelve months.

Mechanism and benefits

The carefully injected small portions of hyaluronic acid act like inflated cushions that support the natural facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.

Indication

These injections are commonly used as a treatment for the facial folds and wrinkles that occur as a result of aging. Popular treatment areas include:

  • Forehead lines
  • ‘Worry lines’ between the eyebrows
  • Smile lines, or the ‘nasolabial fold,’ running from the corners of the mouth to the nose.
  • ‘Crow’s feet’ around the eyes
  • Plumping up the lips or cheeks
  • Marionette lines (running vertically down the chin from the edges of the mouth)

Most patients are 30 to 65 years old and are looking to reverse the signs of aging, although people both older and younger may receive hyaluronic acid injections. Many patients opt for HA fillers as an alternative to other injectable fillers, such as collagen, because there is no risk of an allergic reaction.

Contra-indication

There is only a very small risk of side-effects from the use of hyaluronic acid. The treatment is minimally painful and quick and easy to recover from.

Preparation

There is no special preparation or preliminary skin test needed. If necessary, the doctor might apply a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area. It is best to refrain from taking aspirin or vitamin E supplements before HA treatment.

Procedure

The treatment is performed at the doctor’s office and takes normally between 10 and 30 minutes. The patients are able to return home or to work immediately after. The treatment consists of very small amounts of hyaluronic acid which are injected under the skin in the treatment areas. The doctor will use an extremely thin needle, thus also minimizing discomfort.

Time investment

Free up 10 to 30 minutes for one or two facial zones.

Recovery and aftercare.

There is practically no recovery time. Patients can leave the treatment room immediately after and continue normal daily routine or work. It is however best to avoid extreme exposure to sunlight or heat in the hours following treatment, as this might increase temporary swelling. Should any discomfort appear within hours or days of the procedure, it is best to contact the doctor.

Complications

Complications after treatment are extremely rare. It is however normal to experience a minor swelling or bruising of the treated areas in the first hours or even days after treatment. For the first day after treatment it is best to avoid sudden strong muscle movements in the treated parts.

Prognosis

Change appears immediately after treatment but it will take a few days to see the full impact and the rejuvenated look: fine lines will be difficult to see, large folds will be smoother and lips or other areas will be fuller. This younger and fresher look will normally stay for months, even up to a year. We recommend treatment every six months.
